Here to Listen

A person-centred approach

We are here to listen

My name is Claire McAndrew and I am a qualified counsellor and owner of Here to Listen Counselling. In addition to working in the NHS as a qualified nurse, I am excited to be able to offer counselling services Thursday and Friday afternoons here in the peaceful surroundings of Eastthorpe Hall.

I offer a safe space that is for you and about you, where you are the expert in yourself and where we work in partnership to help you make the changes you decide on. You can come and find a safe and welcoming space and talk about whatever you want to without fear of judgement or rejection. I am here to listen to you and help you find the person you want to be.

My experience

My diploma qualification in Counselling  and experience so far is in using a ‘Person-centred approach’. This can be a really beneficial approach for clients as you take the lead and I see you as the expert in yourself. We work together in a very open, organic non-directive way with you identifying your own goals. I don’t tell you what to do or give advice but I help shed light on what you might ‘know’ and are experiencing but might be struggling to make sense of. This approach can feel comfortable for people who feel overwhelmed by their issues because you will never be pushed to a place you don’t want to be, or talk about something you don’t want to talk about. However, clients tell me that it is the very fact they don’t feel pressured to talk about the difficult things that can sometimes  help them to do just that when they are ready.

I have experience both during training and since qualifying last year in counselling clients who bring a variety of issues including; divorce, bereavement, anxiety, depression different aspects of domestic abuse, traumatic experiences, sexuality, health problems and career issues.

I am also a qualified nurse  and have worked for the NHS for 25 years. I have worked with patients and professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have many years’ experience of working with people living with long term/end of life conditions and their carers and families so I have a good understanding of the issues that can arise.

what i offer

Counselling is hard and it is a brave thing to make that first contact, I know because I have been through it myself as a client. For all potential new clients we would have an initial assessment session by phone for 30 minutes to see if I am the counsellor for you. There is no obligation or expectation at that assessment.

I have worked with carers and those with physical and mental challenges for many years so I am all too aware of the potential difficulties some people can have in getting out of the house. Therefore, as well as offering in person appointments, I can also offer appointments by phone or online or, on occasion, a hybrid approach. In certain circumstances home visits might be possible.

I can offer short or long-term counselling and am happy to discuss a set number of sessions if this is what works for you.

Having an initial consultation is important as it not only helps you to see if I am the right counsellor for you but it helps me understand if I can appropriately and safely help with the issues you want to bring. I take my role and responsibilities very seriously and I am a member of the professional body the British Association of Psychotherapy and Counselling. I work within their ethical framework which provides protection, guidance and support for both you and me. If I do not feel I am the right counsellor for you I will try and help you find someone who will be more suited/ qualified to meet your needs.

You can find out more about me on the Counselling Directory, The BACP website and via my social media pages on Instagram and Facebook under ‘Here to Listen Counselling’.

You can also contact me on my mobile number 07733 120795, however feels most comfortable for you.
