Dr Rachel Lee

Hello, I’m Rachel. I’m the director of North Star Psychology Ltd and an experienced Chartered Clinical Psychologist and accredited Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist. I worked in the NHS for 20 years, most recently as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist. I now run a busy psychology practice at Eastthorpe Hall. I’m delighted to be able to offer assessment, therapy and coaching sessions in the tranquil and soothing environment of Eastthorpe Hall, as I think it is the ideal setting for therapeutic work. I offer specialist, evidence-based therapies for anxiety, trauma-related difficulties and low-self esteem. I have a passion for helping others recover from distressing events and have helped hundreds of people change their life for the better. I also offer psychologically-informed coaching sessions, for example to help people who are struggling to enjoy their work due to feeling overwhelmed, experiencing imposter phenomenon, or because they have a lack of balance in their life.  I am a registered provider with a number of insurance companies and I offer a free 15-minute consultation, which you can book via my website www.northstarpsychology.co.uk.

Anxiety and post-traumatic stress
If anxiety or trauma symptoms are getting in the way of living your life the way you’d like to, then you may wish to consider having a course of therapy. I enjoy helping people identify and change unhelpful patterns that are keeping them stuck, so that they can feel calmer and more in control of their emotional responses and do more of the things that matter to them. I also enjoy helping people heal and recover from distressing or traumatic past events. I have advanced training in a range of evidence-based psychological therapies (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)), which means that I can tailor my approach based on a person’s current difficulties and their individual needs.

Pain
If you are living with pain, then you might be interested to attend an Empowered Relief class (see below for more details). Empowered Relief is a single-session treatment for pain that has been developed by pain psychologists at Stanford University. This treatment has been shown to be as effective as an eight week programme of cognitive behavioural therapy in terms of reducing pain interference, pain bothersomeness, sleep disturbance and other outcomes (Darnall, 2021). I am a certified instructor and offer Empowered Relief classes to individuals and groups. EMDR and CBT are also helpful treatments for persistent pain.

My experience
I worked in the NHS for over 20 years, most recently as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist. I completed my doctorate in clinical psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London in 2005. I have working in a range of NHS positions in in both London and West Yorkshire, including a number of leadership roles. I have performed research and taught sessions on clinical psychology training courses and cognitive behavioural therapy courses at the universities of Leeds, Sheffield, York and Huddersfield.

My Approach

Clients often come to me for help with events that they have felt unable to speak about with others. It is a great privilege to be able help people change the way they feel and think about highly distressing events. I deliver therapy with kindness, warmth, care and compassion. This enables the people I work with to feel safe within therapy, so that they can overcome their difficulties, enjoy the present and plan for the future.

It’s your experience

Therapies I Offer

EMDR

I specialise in helping people with anxiety and trauma symptoms or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for PTSD. EMDR is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and has the ability to resolve trauma symptoms like flashbacks and nightmares. I have used EMDR therapy to successfully treat clients who have experienced single traumatic events (such as car accidents, assaults, birth trauma, witnessing others in a life-threatening situation, and traumatic grief) and also those who have endured prolonged trauma (such as childhood abuse and domestic violence). I have also used EMDR to successfully treat fears and phobias.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapies

The other strand of my work involves using cognitive behavioural interventions including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT-informed therapy) to help people change unhelpful patterns of behaviour related to difficult or distressing thoughts, emotions and/or events. I also work with students and young adults who have psychological difficulties (e.g. exam-related anxiety) that are preventing them from achieving their potential. I can offer DBT-informed groups to help people learn the skills they need to cope with intense emotions.

Empowered Relief

Empowered Relief is a cutting-edge and scientifically-proven single-session treatment for people who are living with pain. This two-hour class can give you the pain relief skills you need to manage your pain so that you can feel more in control of your pain, reduce the way that pain interferes with your life, sleep better, and improve your mood. Empowered relief is a suitable treatment for any type of pain. For example, this class could be helpful for you if you are experiencing back pain, migraines and headaches, fibromyalgia, cancer-related pain, arthritis or joint pain, neck pain, muscle pain, testicular pain, and lasting pain in scar tissue. Only people who have been trained and certified by the Empowered Relief team at Stanford University can offer Empowered Relief. I am excited to bring this novel treatment to Eastthorpe Hall, as it is not widely available within the UK.
